Servant leader model ‘very practical’ say Asian Outreach directors

Noel Hutchison and Steve Kennedy left a Lead Like Jesus seminar last spring most impressed with its practicality. Noel and Steve are the director and assistant director respectively of the Canadian branch of Asian Outreach International. Asian Outreach is an international Christian charitable organization.

"I was most impacted by the bringing together of Biblical principles and example of Christ into a work environment in a way that was so practical and respectful of people," says Steve. "It brought leadership from an exclusive perspective down to a very practical and manageable level."

Steve says it has changed how he relates to the people he works with, even if not in a fully intentional way. "As I understand that to lead means to serve, I’m seeing that leading isn’t just asking what a person can do for you, but leading means what can I do for you, how can I serve you to grow as a person and ultimately have us work better together?"

Steve says the seminar has motivated him to do more reading and thinking on leadership.

Noel notes that the seminar has been an important step in his journey towards understanding leadership as well. "Over the past couple of years, I’ve been trying to break leadership down into very practical, tangible steps," says Noel.

"This seminar was one of the most practical I’ve attended for different reasons."

The opportunity to look at leadership with various peers from the community was one reason. "Like in any seminar, it was during the times of interaction that I took away the most."

He also found the material by Ken Blanchard very useful. "Blanchard has a way of giving practical insight into things that people normally complicate," says Noel. "He provides a very practical look at Christ-like leadership."

Noel notes that some of the current popular leadership models, especially from a secular perspective, can tend to be aggressive. "Leading like Jesus is about leading by lifestyle, leading by example, leading through transparency. It really is a very practical model for leadership."
